ACC news release - Wake suspends, dismisses players

Wake Forest head basketball coach Danny Manning and Director of Athletics Ron Wellman announced Friday that senior Devin Thomas has been suspended for two games and sophomore Cornelius Hudson has been dismissed from the team for violations of athletics department policy.

“Cornelius and Devin have had lapses of judgment and hopefully they will learn from this,” said Manning. “We will continue to support them with their academic responsibilities at Wake Forest.”

Thomas, a 6-9 senior forward from Harrisburg, Pa. (Central Dauphin), leads the Demon Deacons in scoring (15.8 ppg) and rebounding (10.2 rpg) this season and is one of two players in the ACC averaging a double-double in both conference and overall games. He is the active ACC leader in career rebounds (1,029) and double-doubles (33).

Hudson, a 6-7 sophomore forward from Dallas, Texas (Mansfield Timberview/Mt. Zion Christian Academy), is averaging 7.8 points and 3.3 rebounds this season. He scored a career-high 22 points, making 6-of-10 three-point attempts, in the Deacons’ last game at Pitt on Feb. 16.

Takeaways from UNC-Miami game?

What do we make of that "game" in regards to our next two games.

Miami hasn't exactly played all that well last two games. Do they turn it around agaisnt us? Does the drubbing deflate them a bit or focus them? Anyone give us match up problems?

Who do we match up with Johnson? Anyone outside of Johnson give us fits match up wise? Does our half court game take away what UNC does well with their athletes?

Baseball: Virginia blanks App State 8-0

Virginia Defeats Appalachian State, 8-0
Cavalier pitchers strike out 18 in convincing win

The Virginia baseball team blanked Appalachian State, 8-0, Saturday in the Caravelle Resort Tournament at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark in Myrtle Beach. Ranked between No. 4 and No. 13 in the preseason polls, the Cavaliers (2-0) racked up 15 hits while three pitchers combined on a five-hitter.

“It was a really good win for us,” Virginia head coach Brian O’Connor said. “Daniel Lynch did a tremendous job for us in his first start. I thought he was in complete control and made some really big pitches with runners in scoring position and certainly he showed why we decided to start him tonight. He’s a talented young man. I thought we also did some really good things offensively.”

UVA freshman starter Daniel Lynch (Fr., Henrico, Va.) worked five shutout innings, giving up four hits and two walks while striking out nine in earning the win. It marked the most strikeouts by a UVA freshman since Alec Bettinger fanned 11 on April 23, 2014, against Richmond. It also was the most strikeouts by a UVA rookie in his college debut in head coach Brian O’Connor’s 13 seasons at Virginia.

The UVA pitching trio of Lynch, Holden Grounds (Jr., Corsicana, Texas) and Jack Roberts (R-So., Richmond, Va.) combined to limit Appalachian State (0-2) to five hits while striking out 18 batters, most by the UVA pitching staff since Nathan Kirby’s 18-strikeout performance on April 4, 2014, in a no-hitter at Pitt. Freshman Seth Hardin (0-1) took the loss for Appalachian State, allowing five runs (one earned), seven hits and two walks over five innings.

Pavin Smith (So., Jupiter, Fla.) doubled twice and went 4-for-4, matching a career high for hits as UVA piled up 15 hits in the win. Daniel Pinero (Jr., Toronto, Ontario) drove in four runs, also matching a career best.

Virginia manufactured the game’s first run in the third inning. Cameron Simmons (Fr., Royersford, Pa.) hit a leadoff infield single and moved to second when shortstop Henry Davis’s throw sailed into the camera well. Adam Haseley (So., Windermere, Fla.) grounded to second to move Simmons over, and Ernie Clement (So., Rochester, N.Y.) laid down a bunt single to bring in the run.

UVA added a run in the fourth. Smith doubled down the left-field line to open the inning, moved to third on a Pinero flyout and scored on a Robbie Coman (Sr., Lake Worth, Fla.) groundout to shortstop.

The Cavaliers tacked on more three more runs in the fifth inning on a bases-clearing double from Pinero, which glanced off the glove of diving left fielder Tyler Stroup. UVA was aided by a two-out fielding error by Davis on a Matt Thaiss (Jr., Jackson, N.J.) grounder. Two batters later, Pinero smacked his double to left-center.

UVA strung together five straight two-out hits in the sixth inning, with Thaiss, Smith and Pinero each recording RBI singles, in a three-run frame to push the lead to 8-0.

Virginia concludes play in the Caravelle Resort Tournament at 1 p.m. Sunday (Feb. 21) when it plays No. 21 Coastal Carolina (1-1) at Springs Brooks Stadium in Conway, S.C. ESPN3 will have the live video broadcast online, while the audio of the game will air on VirginiaSports.com through a Cavaliers Live subscription. What is with all this UNC-is-the-most-talented hype?

The Heels are good, but what is so special about them this year compared to the last several years that makes them worthy of all the hype as the team that "by far" has the most natural talent in the country. Brice Johnson played well against Duke, but why is he all of a sudden the runaway winner of POTY in the ACC according to the talking heads this weekend? What are they seeing about UNC that is so friggin' special? I think we run them out of the house when they visit JPJ, and that's not simply because we are playing at home. I think we could take them anywhere! Take every player on their roster and ask yourself, "Would I trade one of ours for one of theirs?" assuming you can only trade equal positions i.e. not Mike Tobey for Marcus Paige. The only potential trade I could see would be Brice Johnson for Tobey, but I really don't know. When Tobey is on he just clicks with the team.

My UNCheat rant for the month

UNCheat escapes again - a Judge threw out a former basketball player's and a former football player's suits yesterday, saying sovereign immunity applies (they can not sue them because the cheats are an arm of the state) and that the statute of limitations had expired. The suits alleged UNC had breached its contract with them to provide them a quality education because the school and the athletic department steered them into sham courses to keep them eligible. While I agree that the players allowed it to happen, I still wish a jury would have been able to hear the evidence and weigh whether their wills were overcome by the athletic department's and coaches' pressure. That way UNC's continued cheating would have been at least fully uncovered to the public. These shenanigans are a disgrace to college athletics: sham courses, whole program departments set up for mostly athletes to get credits without ever actually attending courses, taking courses on line where the athletes are not the ones doing the work, having surrogates within or hired by the athletic department write papers for "student athletes" (I say that with a grain of salt), coaches actually participating in these acts; and other despicable acts. And, in the meantime, the NCAA does absolutely nothing!!!!! For years and years!!!! If any one of these things happened at UVA (which it would not), the NCAA would crucify us within days! But the TeflonHoles get away with everything. I just do not understand this. I really wish the Federal government (FBI) would get involved because this is racketeering because Federal money is involved, so they have jurisdiction.

WOW Grayson Allen walks nonstop in games and gets away with it!

Just like in the last shot he took on us, if you go look at the Louisville game back when it's 22 to 22 at the 7:01 first half mark, you will clearly see he catches the ball on an outlet fast break and takes two steps before he even dribbles, then he picks the ball up, puts down the first foot, then the second foot then leans into #10 to draw body contact and he does that head snap and body contortion at the same time he puts down the third step to push off and gets away with it game after game. I see how he does it. He makes it look like he is pushing off with the trailer foot and he dips down and draws attention to the body contact and upper body contortion as he cheats with a quick forward foot hits the floor he kicks out the trailer foot to make it look like he has come off the ground on that foot as he dips down to sneak the push off with the front foot.

If you watch it at full speed you can't catch it because of all the upper body head snap, contorted back and the back foot kicking out, but if you slow it down it's really easy to see that he takes three steps on that Euro stride layup! Go back and watch and count the steps.

Baseball: Hoos open with 8-6 win over Kent State

From UVa:

Virginia Defeats Kent State, 8-6, in 2016 Season Opener
Jones works seven shutout innings in Cavaliers’ season-opening win

Behind seven shutout innings from starting pitcher Connor Jones (Jr., Chesapeake, Va.), the Virginia baseball team opened its 2016 season with an 8-6 win over Kent State Friday in the Caravelle Resort Tournament at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark in Myrtle Beach. Ranked between No. 4 and No. 13 in the preseason polls, the Cavaliers jumped out to an 8-0 advantage after eight innings before holding off a six-run Kent State rally in the ninth inning.

“This was a good win for us,” Virginia head coach Brian O’Connor said. “Connor Jones was tremendous tonight and gave us exactly what we needed. He was efficient and threw the ball great. (Eric) Lauer is one of the best pitchers we will see this season, and we had a good approach against him. Our guys really fought against him and laid off some close pitches. Certainly we did not do a great job out of the bullpen, but we’re getting guys out there and getting them experience.”

Jones (1-0) worked seven shutout innings, allowing just three hits and no walks while striking out eight. He retired 13 of the last 14 batters he faced. With the potential go-ahead run at the plate in the ninth inning, Alec Bettinger (Jr., Woodbridge, Va.) got the final out of the game to earn his first save.

Preseason All-America left-hander Eric Lauer (0-1) started for Kent State and worked five innings, allowing three earned runs, four hits and five walks while striking out five in taking the loss.

Ernie Clement (So., Rochester, N.Y.) and Matt Thaiss (Jr., Jackson, N.J.) each recorded three hits for Virginia, which finished with 11 for the game. Clement and Pavin Smith (So., Jupiter, Fla.) each knocked in a pair of runs.

Virginia broke a scoreless deadlock in the fourth inning. With two out and runners on first and second, Adam Haseley (So., Windermere, Fla.) drew a walk to load the bases. Lauer uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Robbie Coman (Sr., Lake Worth, Fla.) to cross the plate, and Clement followed with a two-run single to center, bringing in Jake McCarthy (Fr., Scranton, Pa.) and Haseley.

The Cavaliers tacked on a run in the seventh inning. Clement bunted his way on base and moved to second on a wild pitch. After Thaiss grounded to second base to move Clement to third, Smith bounced a single through the middle of the drawn-in infield to make it a 4-0 game.

UVA doubled its lead with four runs in the eighth. Freshman Cameron Simmons (Royersford, Pa.) launched a solo home run to left-center field to open the inning. A passed ball with the bases loaded later in the inning allowed Haseley to score. Smith followed with an RBI single and Daniel Pinero (Jr., Toronto, Ontario) added a sacrifice fly to give UVA an 8-0 edge.

Kent State nearly pulled off an epic comeback by sending 11 batters to the plate and scoring six runs in the ninth inning. The first four Golden Flashes reached base safely against UVA reliever Chesdin Harrington (Fr., Montpelier, Va.), including a two-run single from Luke Burch. David Rosenberger (Sr., Bethlehem, Pa.) took over and got the first two outs before allowing an RBI single to Dom Iero and a three-run double to Pete Schuler. Bettinger then entered and hit Zach Hollander before getting Mason Mamarella to ground to shortstop for a fielder’s choice at second base to end the game.

Virginia continues play in the Caravelle Resort Tournament at 4 p.m. Saturday (Feb. 20) when it takes on Appalachian State. The audio of the game will air on VirginiaSports.com and is available through a Cavaliers Live subscription. In the Charlottesville area, WINA 1070-AM and 98.9 FM will have the radio broadcast. A link to live statistics also can be found on VirginiaSports.com.

It's Official

Roy Williams is a horrible coach. I have said all along that he was a great recruiter and a mediocre coach that wins only when he has the most talent. I'm officially changing it to he's a horrible coach. Carolina fans should want him fired. I don't care if he won a title. I don't count the first one because they were Matt Doherty's players and they just played and were that much better that year. He's an embarrassment!

Following his team's 20-point win over NC State on Monday night, senior guard Malcolm Brogdon said he didn't have any extra juice facing Cat Barber, one of the players too who has been making a case of late for ACC Player of the Year. In this video interview, Brogdon, who had a team-high 22 points and was a big reason Barber couldn't be his normal self, talks not only about the 73-53 victory over the Wolfpack but also about the loss to Duke last Saturday, how it impacted the team, what they learned from it, and how they move forward next Monday night when they travel down to Miami to face the Hurricanes.

Reigning Champions Begin 2016 Season
This marks the start of the 128th season of Virginia Baseball. Virginia comes off the most special season among its previous 127 after the Cavaliers captured their first national championship in 2015.

UVA was 44-24 overall last season but caught fire in the postseason, going 10-2 in the NCAA tournament. The Cavaliers defeated Arkansas in the College World Series before winning two of three games against Florida and then two of three against Vanderbilt in the CWS Finals.

Noting the Opening Weekend
Virginia is 30-7-1 in opening weekends during Brian O’Connor’s 12 years as head coach. The Cavaliers swept a three-game series last year to open the season at East Carolina.

UVA is opening the season in Myrtle Beach for the second time in the last five years. In 2012, UVA went 1-1-1 at the Caravelle Resort Tournament, falling to Boston College (5-3), downing Coastal Carolina (9-3) and tying James Madison (4-4 in 8-inning, rain-shortened game).

The Golden Flashes are the favorites to win the 2016 Mid-American Conference championship. Kent State was 31-22 last year, including an 18-9 league mark. Slated to start Friday, junior LHP Eric Lauer was 5-4 with a 1.98 ERA last year. The Chanticleers reached the NCAA tournament last season, finishing with a 39-20 record and playing in the College Station Regional. Paez batted .326 with eight home runs, 42 RBI and 16 stolen bases.

Up Next
Virginia returns to Davenport Field at 3 p.m. to face VMI in the Cavaliers’ 2016 home opener.

Does anyone have data or an impression of where UVA bball fans travel best?

Yes, yes, I know, one game at a time, I'm knocking on every piece of wood in my hotel room, etc., etc.

Now, superstitions, jinxes, and irrational paranoia aside (I know that's really, really difficult for a segment of the board), does anyone have any input on whether we would be better off, as far as how many UVA fans will travel to support us, being in the East or the South? Assuming we continue along as we are, we'll play our first weekend in Raleigh, but would we rather be in Louisville (South) or Philly (East) the second weekend?

Mark Titus on Allen's travel and Shayok's defense

I know we're past it now (maybe), but I was just wondering where Mark Titus is writing this year since he left Grantland, and it seems he's only on Twitter for now.

So I was scrolling through and saw this series on Allen's travel and Shayok's defense. Click on this particular tweet and just scroll a bit for the full series. Or click around - it's kind of tough to paste each tweet the right way. Anyway, you'll like it :)

Wish he had a full blog up and running again...
