OT: Guitarist son going on tour in Australia

From time to time I provide an update on this site with respect to my guitar playing son. I have many friends on this board and this is a good way to reach out to many of them. Hans Kristian is now 17 and a Hoo through and through, but his destination next fall will be Berklee College of Music in Boston. However, his older brother is in the E-School and a member of the UVA crew team so there is always that!

Anyway, as many of you know, Hans Kristian had the tremendous honor of meeting Jackson Browne this past summer. Well, last week Jackson invited Hans Kristian to join him on his Australian Tour in Match 2016!!! This will include concerts at the Sydney Opera House in addition to the huge Byron Bay Bluesfest. Here is a brief video from a sofa jam this summer:

Go Hoos!

Richmond T-D does it again.

I returned from Charleston Monday afternoon hoping to read about our win in the Sunday game. Because it was a late game, I was not surprised that there was no article in the Monday paper. There was a score and a statement that there would be an article in the Tuesday paper. I noticed that there were three articles in the Tuesday edition about Hokie football but absolutely nothing about UVA rolling through the basketball tournament.

Just a random thought I had after one play in the game

I think it was the second bucket of the second half. GM turned the ball over and UVa had a fast break. I think it was Perrantes who fed a breakaway Shayok who you just knew was going to tear the rim off the backboard but he didn't. He just laid the ball in. My thought was that he didn't want to get too crazy after Darius missed that dunk Friday and got yanked from the game.

Great win today!

Yes, the fourth quarter collapse tarnished it to some extent, but we beat one of our ACC rivals in a game where we played some of our best, most exciting football for three quarters. The W goes in the book asterisk free. It's a win.

Proud of our coaches and players for not giving up and putting their all into a game that was largely meaningless for anything other than competitive spirit and love of the game.

And we've still got a coaching change to look forward to. Best of both worlds today.

Love this team.

George Mason Game Thoughts

TB sent a message by starting Salt. I love it because Tobey is hurting the defense.

Defense was quick early. Mason was knocking down some tough shots.

The fact we can bench guys shows the depth we have built this year.

Offensive flow seemed better. Game flow early on was great because they let the kids play.

Some baskets we gave up especially late in the first half were unusual breakdowns from the Tony Bennett team that I'm sure will be cleaned up as we play more games because bigger teams will have an easy time on the glass crashing the board if we don't clean it up.

Tobey got the message. This matchup was good for him on the offensive end. Dino made a great point- if you can't muscle him around and it turns into a finesse game then he will score at will.

We're going to have to accept that teams are going to get a little bit easier baskets at the rim. Did not realize how much DA and AM kept people away. This group doesn't have the rim protector. MD will be that guy in a few years.

Gill is a force if he can stay out of early foul trouble which seems to affect his game sometimes.

We have to be careful about getting too cute on offense. There were times in the second half we started over passing the basketball versus taking it to the hoop. I love the fact we were attacking and don't want to get conservative, so we just have to be careful at times.

Quicker guards like those at Miami may give us issues depending on how the game is called. We aren't able to bump cutters like the past which is hurting defense until we adjust.

Salt gives us a banger and allows us to use fouls that can stay away from MT and AG.

Obviously we still need some work before that gangbuster of a schedule in December. If we can go 3-1 or even 2-2 vs. Cal, OSU, West Virginia, and Nova, I think that will help us in the long run.

Screens are getting better than earlier in the week. More flare action. Our guys find each other better than any team I watch in college basketball. Always know where others guys are so the offense never gets stagnant with your guys standing around.

MB is going to pushing to be at the least second team All-American.

LP needs to be a backup? I was wrong and will eat my words from the other day. He plays like this nightly? I will dance naked on my street when we win title :)

I hope Nolte finds his game because he has fallen very low on the depth chart and his shot will be needed at some point

The Perfect Storm for UVA

We deny Beamer a win in his last game as VT's coach, we break the 11 win streak they have over UVA, we break their consecutive bowl streak...WOW, I can't think of a better way to get one over the Hokies that will have a longer lasting effect than 11 straight losses to them!!!! They'll never get over it!!!

And the pressure is going to be on them BIG TIME!!!! We have nothing to loose, all we have to to do is go out on the field and have a great time and get one of the biggest wins in UVA history. Beating your rival in game that has so much at stake for them is really sweet!!!!

For the first time in a long time, I feel some optimism about football.

Assuming London is gone (FINALLY), and assuming we make a good hire (and I am optimistic on this front), we finally have something to look forward to. I'll renew my season tickets and drive to the games with a feeling of hope instead of dread. The London cloud will finally be cleared.

OZ is going to be a superstar. Johns will be a very good quarterback next season. Smoke finally looks like the 5-star recruit that we were so excited to land. Micah looks solid at LB, Blanding is back, Bradshaw is developing, Darious Latimore could be a star at CB, Thornhill will likely emerge as a top-line safety, Brown could still emerge on the DL......

Three years ago I was one of the first people to start sounding the alarm on London and my frustration grew to a ridiculous, demoralizing level. I actually feel that lifting now and I'm so ready to enjoy UVa football again.

Weekend Wrap: Duke Edition

After Virginia's 42-34 win over Duke on Saturday, the Cavaliers left the field at Scott Stadium excited about a win over what has become a rival in recent years but also knowing that they have only one more opportunity to close out the 2015 season and send their seniors out with a victory.

In the latest Weekend Wrap, we'll let the players talk about the win, how it came to be, and what their mindset is going forward.

Olamide Zaccheaus

Wide receiver Olamide Zaccheaus had quite a day in the win over the Blue Devils, as the first-year playmaker passed for a touchdown and caught another, as well as amassing 163 all-purpose yards. Here he talks about the victory, his touchdown pass, putting last week's loss to Louisville behind him, and his mindset as the team goes forward looking for one more win.

TJ Thorpe

Wide receiver TJ Thorpe hasn't had the kind of senior season he had hoped to have but in Saturday's win, the Durham native was able to have a big impact on the outcome. In this video interview, he talks about his five catches for 58 yards as well as his two runs for 28, one of which he took to the house for a touchdown.

Micah Kiser

Sophomore Micah Kiser had an incredible game in UVa's win over Duke, racking up a career-high 17 tackles. In this video interview, the ACC's leading tackler talks about the victory over the Blue Devils, about what the Cavaliers are playing for, about playing the game without one of his teammates at linebacker, and about the play of senior DE Trent Corney and how important that was for the Wahoos.

Matt Johns

Over the past few weeks, Matt Johns has built on each performance and been able to play with a lot more confidence. In this video interview, he talks about his career-high 344 yards in the Duke win, being more "wide open" earlier in the game before the fourth quarter's lack of execution, and how he's been able to focus and play with confidence while finding his "ground zero."

LP Needs To Play Backup...and Quick

This year's team is different from the past 3 teams (if not more) mainly in that we don't have a legit knockdown shooter on the team. Our brand seems to be strong defense, balanced scoring attack. and transition points based on athletic defense. This year's team needs it's PG to be as much of an offensive threat as all 4 other players on the floor. He won't have the luxury of passing, then screening away for a knockdown shooter like JH or a guy like J. Anderson to curl into the lane for some offense. We don't even have the security on the glass we're used to having without AM and DA. We don't have this stable structured offense that you can simply "set up." LP is mainly a threat when no one is looking for him. He's a C+ shooter, avg. defender, he's reluctant to get inside the lane and has never been a particularly good finisher around the rim or otherwise.

I like what Hall, then Thompson can do in this role. Their ability to create offensively and get inside the lane would give this team that lacks it's identity some needed edge. Plus both guys are plus passers and plus athletes. Just more dynamic for what we need.

LP would be perfect off the bench. I think he would also play looser without having the pressure on him of being a starter.

Playing like #6 team

This tournament was just what CTB ordered.. Hoos refocused on D but better yet, they have discovered their offense Our interior bigs Tobey and Gill, had a great game against a solid big in Thompson Brogdon really stepped up tonight after an off night Friday.

This team still has a way to go to meet its full potential, but we can see certain moves that have already born dividends- with Salt starting (sent big message to MT who responded) Shayok Thompson and Hall all rotating in before Nolte LP hunting for his shot.

December will have a ton of tests but they are at JPJ. Like how this team is taking shape.
