Alliance

Really glad we signed the alliance agreement with the Pac 10 and Big 10 that pledged support of the student athlete and diversity of academic opportunity. I'm not sure that the presidents, chancellors, and ACC athletic directors in concert with the league personnel are qualified to run a freaking rec league.

Fall Camp Practice #2 Notes

Good evening and happy Friday. Just left McCue after the open practice period, and will be heading back out there in a bit for player interviews. Notes are light today because we didn’t see much but here goes:

-Guys in yellow, not participating: Will Simpkins, Noah Vaughn, Davis Lane, Donovan Johnson, Dak Twitty, Titus Ivy Devon Sherwood. Not a huge change from Wednesday. Simpkins did have a boot on, though.

-Xavier Brown was in a sling and street clothes. He seemed to be in good spirits, and I heard someone call him “Coach Brown”. Looks like he’ll be out a while though.

-We had referees out there today, as well as a drone circling practice from above, and NFL scouts. The Panthers, Falcons and Saints were represented today.

-After stretching we got FG and punt team work. Will Bettridge made 37 yard attempts from both hashes, as did 34-year old walk-on Matt Ganyard, who showed some real power on his attempt.

-We saw quite a bit of punt work, and most of the team was either involved in that or watching. Sparks had some really nice punts and a few shorter ones, with none blocked. Kam Butler and other up men shouted out instructions and snap count. As for returners, Ethan Davies, Suderian Harrison, Jaden Gibson and TyLyric Coleman were back there. Coleman had the lone fumble on a booming kick, and recovered the drop with a bunch of guys around.

-Wanted to shout out Eli Wood too, as he nearly blocked a few punts off the edge, and flashed a high motor out there on the block team.

-After special teams, we saw offense work on ball security again, and defense on form tackling (hitting dummies, etc). Tony Elliott was involved again with ball security, and did a lot of hands on coaching, including with Tony Muskett.

Other observations:
-Josh Rawlings is huge. Not sure if he’s a factor or not but he looks like Jelani Woods out there.

-Freshman safety Devin Clark has a long frame too, and sort of towered over Aidan Ryan in a special teams rep.

-I forgot how much the coaches rotate and work with different groups, be it special teams or in different individual drills like ball security. I didn’t see that much rotation from other staffs here.

-I think Miles Green was DNP today too, he went to the indoor facility, though he wasn’t in yellow or anything.

Fall Camp Practice #1 Notes

Good afternoon! Just left McCue and fall camp is officially underway for UVa. We’ll be back over there in a bit to interview some players along with Tony Elliott, but here are my takeaways from the brief period open to the media today:

-Mike Hollins, appropriately, broke the team down to begin practice.

-All we got to see today was the opening stretching period and about 2.5 sessions. There was quite a bit of special teams and individual work in those periods, with no team vs team stuff in there.

-Oddly, they switched the Jersey colors, so the offense wears white and the defense wears blue now. Certainly going to look different in the highlights.

-The team is as healthy as I’ve seen them to open fall camp. It’s worth noting that the off-season came early for UVa, so guys had their surgeries earlier and so on, allowing for that team to be healthier now. With that said there were three guys in yellow jerseys on the bike, not participating: McKale Boley, Will Simpkins and Donovan Johnson.

-There were a few other players in green pennies, but participating: Chico Bennett, Houston Curry and Kendall Cross. There may have been one or two others out there, hard to see everyone across 3 fields.

-As for players who looked healthy, Amaad Foston was out there without a brace, and Dak Twitty had a brace on but was moving well.

-I spent most of my team watching skill guys mostly doing ball security but I watched the offensive line for a bit too. Heffernan seems very detail oriented and was doing a lot of hands on instruction.

-All if the coaches were preaching urgency today, getting in and out of drills, etc. Keith Gaither made the receiver group so up downs after they were a little slow to get lined up for a drill.

-In ball security drills, TeKai Kirby had a “welcome to college football” moment. He was stripped by Gaither in a ball security drill and didn’t go fall on the loose ball, and both Gaither and Elliott let him have it and had him fall on two loose balls.

-The QB room looks thin. Three scholarship guys and walk-ons. Rayman wasn’t working with the QBs when I watched, but he was the holder on FG work.

-If Demick Starling can put it all together..man. He just has elite speed.

-Suderian Harrison looks the part from what I saw. Quick and smooth out there. TyLyric Coleman has the frame to develop into a big-time player, he looks very lanky out there. And freshman RB Donte Hawthorne looks more like a linebacker than a RB. He’s huge.

If I think of anything else, I’ll add it. Open practice #2 is on Friday evening.

Commitment! UVa lands DE/OLB Jewett Hayes

Virginia grabbed another 2024 football commit this afternoon, with Cincinnati native Jewett Hayes making the call for the Hoos. Hayes is a 3-star prospect who plays DE and TE at Moeller High, and chose UVa over offers from Kentucky, West Virginia, Indiana, Illinois and others.

Football recruiting at VT

I have spent the week with my son-in-law at the beach and he is a big VT fan. He mentioned their recruitning as being really good this year. I took a look and with yesterday's announcment it seems they are kicking out butts with this class. Mutiple 4 stars and a much higher ranking coming off a season about as bad as ours from a football perspective. Sorry to see it. The last kid was recruitied by our former receiver Fontel Mines.

Glad to see we offered Nate Ament from Highland Springs.

I always get shot down on this one, but it is time for Williford to flex some of that Richmond muscle that he supposedly possesses. Invariably, the response is that in-state recruiting just does not matter in basketball. But when you identify a Virginia kid as a target, you’d like to think that having a coach from that kid’s city would help. Thus far, Williford has struck out on the Richmond kids we have wanted. Time to change that.

1976 ACC basketball tournament

I just watched the highlights of the 1976 tournament which was won by Virginia in what was certainly one of the most, if not the most, unexpected championships in the history of the tournament. Virginia had a losing ACC record that year and had to defeat three nationally ranked teams. Led by tournament MVP Wally Walker, Virginia defeated a UNC team which had five future first round NBA selections. This was the first time Virginia had advanced to the finals of the rournament, which for years had been dominated by Duke, Maryland, NCSU, and UNC. This team and the Sampson teams laid the groundwork for the recent success of UVA basketball.

Fast-rising forward Punch talks UVa offer, decision timeline
