Swimming World Champs...Day 8 Gold Medals for Douglass and G Walsh to end the meet

With the time difference from Japan, the first day of semifinals and finals will either be in-progress or done depending on where you are, but hopefully you can tune in on Peacock or YouTube highlights.

Here's the Day 1 morning Prelims recap -
200 IM - Kate Douglass and Alex Walsh are 1st and 3rd (tie) going into semis and set up well. Douglass is favored, and Walsh is defending World Champion.
100 Fly - Gretchen Walsh is 8th going into semis in a loaded and tight field
4x100 Free Relay - Douglass and Walsh will both be on the Finals relay after the morning US team qualified 2nd behind the Australians. Maxine Parker was on the morning lineup to qualify.

More to come - if you're interested in the evening semis and Finals recap, you'll be able to find it in the same SwimSwam site easily. I'll probably still be asleep in Seattle.

Glad to see we offered Nate Ament from Highland Springs.

I always get shot down on this one, but it is time for Williford to flex some of that Richmond muscle that he supposedly possesses. Invariably, the response is that in-state recruiting just does not matter in basketball. But when you identify a Virginia kid as a target, you’d like to think that having a coach from that kid’s city would help. Thus far, Williford has struck out on the Richmond kids we have wanted. Time to change that.

1976 ACC basketball tournament

I just watched the highlights of the 1976 tournament which was won by Virginia in what was certainly one of the most, if not the most, unexpected championships in the history of the tournament. Virginia had a losing ACC record that year and had to defeat three nationally ranked teams. Led by tournament MVP Wally Walker, Virginia defeated a UNC team which had five future first round NBA selections. This was the first time Virginia had advanced to the finals of the rournament, which for years had been dominated by Duke, Maryland, NCSU, and UNC. This team and the Sampson teams laid the groundwork for the recent success of UVA basketball.

Fast-rising forward Punch talks UVa offer, decision timeline

Among several recent targets to be offered by UVa, fast-rising forward David Punch talked to @HoustonWilson about the Hoos, the entire staff being on the call when the offer came, and when he’d like to make his college decision.

Countdown to Camp: QBs

Our Countdown to Camp series continues today as @justin ferber looks at UVa’s quarterback situation, a position group that has even more limited depth now than it did a week ago.

Did a double take when I heard Tony Bennett had died this morning

I had just got through trimming bushes/hedges/shrubs outside early due to the brutal temps this month in Big D, Texas and was walking into the walk in shower when I heard Tony Bennett died this morning on the Tv in the Master Bedroom and I stepped backwards, turned my head, where I have a straight on view on my 65" flat screen TV in there and saw it was Tony Bennett the lounge singer who was 96.

I was relieved it wasn't UVA Tony Bennett for sure, but sorry to hear Ole Tony passed away.

Countdown to Camp: WRs and TEs

With the start of fall practice coming real soon, @justin ferber's Countdown to Camp series rolls on today with a look at UVa’s receivers and tight ends. It’s a collective group that will have to make up for a lot of lost production.

Four-star F Cofie talks UVa offer, Sanchez, distance, and timeline

Four-star forward Jacob Cofie was excited to pick up an offer from the Wahoos recently. He talked to @HoustonWilson about UVa, Ron Sanchez, distance from home, his timeline for a decision, and much more.

The good and not so good football news

Big Game Boomer has listed the Top Fifty Defensive Lines for the coming season. The good news is that Virginia comes in at #36. The not so good news in that ten ACC teams are included in the list, and seven teams are ahead of Virginia - Clemson, Florida State, Pitt, Duke, North Carolina State, Notre Dame, and Miami. Louisville and Syracuse trail Virginia on the list.

McKneely Eager to Take on Larger Role

A couple of notable passages from McKneely Eager to Take on Larger Role

“The biggest area of improvement I’m trying to work on is probably my handle,” he said. “Last year I was off the ball a lot, but I feel like this year I might have more ball-handling responsibilities. Obviously, we’ve got Reece, and he’s a great ball-handler. But I feel like I might have to take some responsibility as well this year.”
“I think the one thing I am noticing about him is he’s a little quiet,” Sanchez said, “and I’m hoping that he starts understanding his role here is to be vocal, to demand the ball when he’s open, so that he can impact the game with his shooting ability." “The biggest thing for him is: ‘Can I get to the point where whenever I’m open, my teammates are finding me?’ You can’t be a mouse on the floor when that happens. You’ve got to articulate some things better.
“I told him, ‘Take the parking brake off … If you have a rhythm shot, take it. Be assertive,’ ” Bennett said after that game at JPJ. “It’s a process for everyone, but we needed that, and he’s rising up and bouncing up and hitting some shots, and I want him to keep developing.” In practices this summer, he said, “I’ve definitely been more aggressive, and I’ve been working on my handle, so I’m starting to get to the rim more. Not just living and dying by the 3-point line, but trying to attack and create for others as well.”
Beekman said he’s seen a change in McKneely. “He’s been hunting his shot a lot. His shot was great last year, but I can tell he stayed with it over the summer.,” Beekman said. “I just feel like he’s adding a little more off the dribble. He’s getting to the middle of the paint, shooting floaters. He’s still doing his catch-and-shoot stuff, but also being able to put it on the ground.

Lacrosse vs Football

Wow. Looked at list of UVA’s 10 lacrosse recruits. From my read, 9 four star recruits and one five star (potential best player in the nation). Could you imagine if our football team could recruit like that??? Crazy how UVA academics is such a huge factor to landing tennis, lacrosse, and women student athletes, but football is so much more involved and so difficult to compete against tradition.

Guess for now, keep dominating what we can and hope football slowly reaches respectability.

Commitment! UVa lands 3-star DE Tyler Simmons

UVa landed their 12th commit for the 2024 class this evening, with Florida native Tyler Simmons making the call for the Hoos. Simmons chose UVa over Northwestern and Kansas, after recently taking official visits to all three schools. He also held offers from NC State, Michigan State and many others.
