Saw this tonight that former two year UVA basketball player Lance Blanks transferred to Texas in 88; went on to NBA passed away at 56 yrs old today

I saw this and was sadden to see he had passed away at such a young age.

Just remember that he transferred cause we were just loaded with Guards Richard Morgan, Mel Kennedy, John Johnson, Anthony Solomon, Tom Calloway, Darrick Sims then the year he transferred to Texas, you had John Crotty also coming in to a crowded guard field.

Unfortunately at UVA he only averaged 2.4pts a game his first year and less (1.2pts per game) his second year due to crowded field. He went on to average 19.7 and 20. 3 pts per game his two years at Texas.

With 1,322 points, Blanks holds the record for the highest number of points by a two-year player and is the eighth-leading scorer in University of Texas history. Blanks ended his career at Texas as the all-time leader in steals and stands fourth place in career scoring average with 20.0 points per game.

Virginia ekes out a 9-8 win over James Madison

Virginia led 8-0 after 6 innings behind excellent pitching by Early, but the bullpen once again faltered and gave up 3 runs in the 7th, 3 runs in the 8th, and 2 runs in the 9th. The Hoos got 2 runs in the first on a single by O'Donnell, who had 4 hits in the game, a double by Gelof, and a single by Teel. They added 4 more runs in the second; Stephan led off with a single, Hanson had a bunt single, and Didawick sacrificed; O'Ferrall had an infield out which plated one run, a single by O'Donnell scored Hanson, Gelof's double scored O'Donnell, and Teel's single brought in Gelof. Two more runs were added in the fifth on a double by Anderson, a triple by Saucke, and a single by Stephan. The final run for Virginia was scored when Saucke, Stephan, and Hanson hit consecutive singles to load the bases before O'Farrell hit a sacrifice fly to right field.
Virginia had a total of 17 hits. Teel and Stephan each had 3 hits, and Gelof, Saucke, and Hanson had 2 each. Only an excellent diving catch by the JMU centerfielder in the 7th kept O'Donnell from having a 5-hit night. It was not a pretty win, but I would think that the last few games should have solidified who will be pitching to end the season.

UVa signee Robinson goes in-depth on becoming a Wahoo

For three-star center Anthony Robinson, who committed last week and is now officially signed, there was no reason not to pick UVa. He talked to @HoustonWilson about that decision and what it was about the Wahoos that made them the perfect fit.

Groves says comfort with Bennett and UVa made it an easy decision

Oklahoma transfer forward Jacob Groves talked to @HoustonWilson about why his comfort with Tony Bennett and UVa made picking his final college destination an easy decision.

Chris Dembitz / Phony Bennett

Sad news. Tony’s not on Twitter so Chris ran a funny and prolific account as “Phony Bennett” under the handle @IfTonyTweeted. It started as a parody account for Tony and men’s basketball and turned into a larger UVA superfan account with a lot of laughs and jokes (34,500 of them it appears). He also podcasted off and on for years. UVA sports on Twitter won’t be the same without him.

Virginia men and women S&D teams each add an important transfer

Jasmine Nocenti is transferring from Northwestern with one year of eligibility left. If she regains her strength after a shoulder injury, she will add to the depth in the 50, 100, and 200 free and 1oo breast.

Sam O'Brien is transferring from UNCW where he was the conference champion at 500 and 1650 free. He has two more years of eligibility and will bolster a position of need for Virginia.

Five run 6th inning propels Virginia to 11-6 win over VCU

Virginia scored 1 run each in the 1st, 3rd, and 5th innings on a Gelof infield out, a Gelof bases loaded walk, and a sacrifice fly by O'Donnell respectively, but the team was down 5-3 going into the 6th inning. Teel led off with a home run. Anderson followed with a double and came home on a Stephan double; Tuft drew a walk, and both scored on a triple by O'Ferrall who scored on O'Donnell's single. The Hoos added another run in the 7th and scored two more in the 8th when O'Farrell led off with a double and came home on a home run by O'Donnell.
Berry started on the mound and pitched well until the 5th inning. After he got the first two batters out, he gave up a single and a walk. He was relieved by Hodorovich, who gave up two walks and a single to the three batters he faced. Hodges came in and gave up a double before getting the final out of the inning. Jaxel pitched the 7th and was relieved by Tonas after he gave up a leadoff home run in the 8th. Tonas retired all 6 batters that he faced on 4 strike outs and 2 routine fly balls to Saucke.
Virginia was led by O'Farrell, who had 2 doubles and a triple, 2 RBI, and 3 runs scored. O'Donnell was 2 for 3 with 4 RBI; Stephan was 2 for 5 with a RBI, and Didawick was 2 for 2 and made a diving catch in left field in the 3rd which held VCU to just 1 run in the inning.

12 UVA Sports Programs Score Perfect Academic Progress Rates

Great to see UVA maintaining its world class academic excellence, especially for its student-athletes.
https://virginiasports.com/news/202...excel-in-ncaas-academic-progress-rate-report/
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia athletics program once again displayed impressive results in the Academic Progress Rate (APR) Institutional Report released by the NCAA today (May 2). Four Cavalier programs posted perfect multi-year rates of 1,000 while a total of 12 (of 23) teams had a perfect APR for the 2021-22 academic year.

According to the NCAA, the national four-year academic progress rate for the current report remained 984 from the previous year. UVA’s multi-year average for its 23 programs during the current reporting period is 991. For purposes of the report, indoor and outdoor track and field seasons are combined. UVA’s men’s and women’s squash programs are not included in the report since they are not NCAA Championship-sponsored programs.

The NCAA’s minimum APR academic standard for each team is 930. Typically, teams that scored below the benchmark would have to face penalties that encourage an emphasis and prioritization on academics. However, due to the current penalty suspension (as a result of sports seasons being canceled during the pandemic) in place, teams falling below the minimum 930 score will not be subjected to penalties this year.

Normal Academic Performance Program operations with program penalties and loss of access to postseason competition will resume in spring 2024. This will also include the public recognition of high-performing teams.

All 23 UVA sports programs included in the report exceeded the required APR of 930. Four Cavalier programs – women’s golf, women’s lacrosse and women’s softball and field hockey – posted perfect multi-year scores of 1,000 and 18 of 23 had a score of at least 990.

It marks the 13th time the UVA women’s golf team has been recognized for a perfect annual score of 1,000, the sixth time for women’s lacrosse, the third time for softball and the second time for field hockey.

The Cavalier football program’s multi-year score of 983 matched its highest in the history of the APR program that dates back to the 2004-05 academic season. The UVA baseball team (994) had its best all-time mark. The Cavalier wrestling team (993) and women’s tennis program (992) also equaled their previous best APR multi-year scores.

The 12 UVA teams with a perfect (1000) APR score for the 2020-21 academic year included: baseball, men’s basketball, men’s cross country, men’s golf, men’s soccer, men’s tennis ,field hockey, women’s golf, women’s lacrosse, softball, women’s swimming and diving and women’s tennis.

Implemented in 2003 as part of an ambitious academic reform effort in Division I, the Academic Progress Rate (APR) holds institutions accountable for the academic progress of their student-athletes through a team-based metric that accounts for the eligibility and retention of each student-athlete for each academic term.

The APR provides a real-time look at a program’s academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team’s academic performance. This year, the APR score was a multi-year average of the 2018-19, 2019-20, 2020-21 and 2021-22 academic years.

This is the second year of publicly reported APRs after a one-year COVID-19 hiatus. Last spring, the Division I Board of Directors approved the release of APR scores but voted to continue the suspension of program penalties.

Running Backs

I'm very surprised and happy that UVA hasn't had any running backs enter the transfer portal. We have 9 on the roster and unless we go to a 2 back set, there isn't going to be a lot of playing time for most of them. I hope they all stick around as we know there will be unfortunate injuries and there seems to be a decent variety of skill sets in the group.

Before anyone says it, no, I didn't just jinx the current running back transfer portal situation. I doubt my post has any influence or super natural powers.

Athletic Analysis of Football Recruit Development

The Athletic examined 11 years of recruiting and draft data to see which Power 5 teams are best and worst at developing three-, four- and five-star prospects into draft picks. 50% of UVA's 5 stars were drafted, 21% of their 4 stars, and 5% of their 3 stars. That pretty much lands them where you would expect them to be - 11th in the ACC and 49th in P5.
