April Live Period #1

This weekend is the first of two live period weekends in the month of April which means college coaches will be on the road evaluating high school prospects from today until Sunday. The three main attraction will be the shoe circuit sponsored events.

Nike EYBL: Atlanta, Georgia
Adidas: Council Bluffs, Iowa
Under Armour: Mesa, Arizona

There are a few independent events spread across the country but I do not imagine anyone from the Virginia staff to stop at those.

I will be in Arizona for the Under Armour event. I will post updates throughout the weekend if anyone from the Virginia staff is spotted in Arizona.

We can use this thread for updates throughout the weekend for updates on the other events too.

Have a great weekend everybody!

With Minor and Rohde in the fold, work still remains for UVa

As UVa looks to bolster its roster this offseason, getting Jordan Minor and Andrew Rohde has been huge. @justin ferber takes a look at what those additions mean to the Wahoos and what work remains this offseason.

Virginia defeated VCU 19-6

Early started on the mound and gave up 3 runs in the 3rd after the Cavs had staked out a 9-0 lead. He was replaced after 5 innings by Hodorovich and McKay, who shut down the Rams in the next 3 innings. VCU scored 3 runs in the 9th to reach the final score.
Virginia hitters had 22 hits with 11 different batters having at least 1 hit. Anderson led the way by going 5 for 6 with 3 doubles and 2 home runs and 3 RBI. O'Farrell was 3 for 3 with 3 runs scored and 1 RBI.
Gelof was 2 for 5 including a 3-run home run and 5 RBI. Teel was 2 for 4 with a 2-run home run. Saucke had 3 singles.

Evaluating each UVa position group following spring ball

With last weekend in the rear view, @justin ferber takes a look at each UVa position group and evaluates our confidence in each of them following spring ball.

Transfer Portal Names to Watch (Football)

The post-spring transfer portal window is open, and cornerback and offensive line are the target areas for the Hoos.

UVa has started offering available players and this is just the beginning of the window.

Akron OT Xavior Gray was on Grounds over the weekend, and picked up an offer from the Hoos. Gray is a big guy at 6-foot-9, 330 pounds, and has played in 23 career games for the Zips. Gray also visited Houston and has an offer from the Cougars, Liberty and others.

UVa also offered Rhode Island DB Antonio Carter. The Hoos were one of many programs to jump in the mix with Carter, joining Kentucky, Baylor, Louisville and others. Carter has 105 tackles and an interception over the previous two seasons for the Rams.

Former UVa commit Jimmy Christ is also in the portal, after entering on Saturday. Christ, the younger brother of former Cavalier Tommy Christ, could be a tackle option for the Hoos if they can develop mutual interest.

Despited short time on Grounds, Colandrea shows flashes

Sure, he’s only been on Grounds since January but first-year QB Anthony Colandrea showed some real flashes in UVa’s Spring Game, @justin ferber writes. “AC10” looks right at home.

Virginia and post season baseball

For several weeks I have been concerned about what I thought that I was seeing. In the midst of an impressive win streak, I believed I saw two very possible problem areas - pitching and hitting. We have a deep staff of very good pitchers but no one that I considered to be overpowering. As we have gotten into the conference portion of the schedule, the earned run averages for some have risen dramatically.
On the other hand, we have a stable of very good to excellent hitters, but I had one area of concern. With the exception of Gelof, they were primarily line drive hitter. They were very productive hitting pitches in the top half of the strike zone. Pitches at or below the knees have resulted in strike outs or routine ground balls. I had hope that my eyes were deceiving me, but the games in the Pitt series convinced me that good pitchers who could consistently throw strikes would make a Virginia more problematic.

The 3-2-1: Breaking down what we learned from the Spring Game
