Virginia baseball may have to hit the transfer portal hard this year

Virginia has excellent commitments in the 2024 class. The problem is that some may be too good to get through the major league draft. Projections for the draft indicate that as many as four commits may be in the top 50. Caleb Bonemer, Trey Gregory-Alford, Alden Harris, and Bryce Meccage seem to be sure high draft picks unless they indicate that they intend to come to Virginia, and there are others who might be drafted. It would be nice if Oak could find some NIL money to make Virginia a more attractive financial option.

Full Court Press

After watching the success Syracuse had against use with their full court pressure (of course we had our second string in with no true PG which didn't help our cause) it made me think of what it would be like if Bennett ever tried a full court press with this team. I bet a lineup of Beekman at the point, Gertrude and Rohde/McKneely) as the two behind Beekman backed by Dunn behind them and then either Bond or Buchanon at the back would be a nightmare for teams to against in a full court trap. I know that's not Bennett's MO to do that, but sure would love seeing it thrown at teams even if for a few minutes at different points in games.

UVA’s Transfer Portal Strategy

There are a gazillion transfer options to evaluate and consider and I’m sure the coaching staff has a way of prioritizing them. But here are the three best strategies I see:

- Graduate Transfers - this has worked for them for a while and “we turned Malik into an All-American in one year so we can do it for you too” helps.
- Ivies/Upper Tier Academic schools - Come here and improve your odds of being seen by an NFL scout but you won’t lose (most) of your credits and you’ll still have an A+ diploma when you’re done.
- All-Conference Academic Honor Roll Players (who are leaving because of playing time) - similar messaging as above.

That should make a more manageable list of potential recruits and it has messaging that at least gives UVA a chance of getting a door open to make a player specific pitch.

Thank God we have UVA basketball both programs doing well after Washington has a dumpster fire season!

Rivera has to go and the ENTIRE O line and the ENTIRE secondary is lined with Bums. Fuller is a joke drawing a check jogging around and Rivera's picks with Davis, St. Juste, and Forbes are all busts.

Rivera's free agent picks in the secondary and O line are beyond the worst.

That's Coach Bennett and Coach Mox for filling the void on the weekends with Washington's embarrassing performances on the weekend.

UVA women defeated LaSalle 94-73 in Philadelphia

Brunelle started and led Virginia in minutes played with 22 and was one of six who had double digit scoring. Thirteen played, and all but one played at least 9 minutes. Three point shooting was disappointing as they made just 5 of 21 attempts, but they were 23 of 25 on foul shots. The defense forced 20 turnovers and had 9 steals. Virginia made at least 20 points in all four quarters.

Seen on Twitter

Again don't get mad at the messenger but I saw this on some group boards that Coach Tony Elliott may be released.

UVA reportedly reaching out to several Candidates including the following:

1. VT WR coach Fontel Mines
2. PSU DC Anthony Poindexter
3. Former NFL QB Peyton Manning

Feel bad for Georgetown

They lost to TCU on a banked-in 3-pointer as time expired. Refs were able to review the play to see if he got the shot off in time, and on the replay, he is clearly seen stepping out of bounds before the shot. Refs said they couldn’t do anything about that because they didn’t call it live. But if they HAD called him out of bounds, then they would have been required to review it and could have given him the basket if they got it wrong. These rules make no sense.

I guess they don’t want every game to end with a review looking for something they might have missed, but when you are reviewing the play anyway and notice a mistake, it is asinine to say you can’t do anything about it.

Jordan Minor

Did anyone else notice the announcer say, during the aTm game, that Minor was battling through a knee issue? If this is so, then maybe that explains his lack of explosiveness and mobility. His film shows an athletic player and strong rebounder and thus far he hasn't been able to show any of that. Just curious if anyone else noticed that.

Important win for Virginia over Syracuse 84-62

It wasn't just the usual suspects who led Virginia to a blowout win. McKneely set a personal record with 22 points and was the leading scorer for Virginia, and he was second to Bond (6) with 5 rebounds. Beekman had another excellent game; he was second in scoring with 13 points and made 5 of his 7 shots. He was credited with 8 assists and 0 turnovers. Eight Cavs got at least 6 points, and eleven players grabbed at least 1 rebound as Virginia won on the boards 33 - 27. As a team, Virginia was 12 for 21 (57.1 %) from behind the arc and 12 for 15 (80%) from the foul line. Good shooting, good rebounding, and good defense all were factors in what was arguably our most impressive game.

Football coaches on the road today

UVA’s football staff is splitting time between Charlottesville and other parts of VA today, as they look to wrap up the 2024 recruiting cycle and turn their focus to 2025. Keith Gaither and John Rudzinski flew down to the tidewater to watch King George vs Phoebus (KG has Maryland commit Mekhi White, who UVa will keep recruiting to NSD). Coaches are headed up to DC later this afternoon too, making use of the jet today.
