GAME DAY

I think that we will win today v/s Wake , we have changed a lot since the last game at Wake. We also have been able to rest v/s the pit game , where we had one day to prepare v/s Pitt getting 6 days to prepare. I hope that our FT shooting continues to improve every little bit helps.

The weather was cold and windy, but the Virginia bats were hot

Virginia scored 8 runs in the 3rd inning, 5 in the 4th, 4 in the 5th, and 3 in the 8th to defeat Hofstra 21 - 3. Blanco started on the mound and pitched the first 3 innings to earn the win. Both teams went deep into the bullpen. Virginia was led at the plate by Whalen, who was 4 for 4 with 2 walks and 6 RBI. Ford was 3 for 5 with 1 of Virginia's 4 home runs. O'Ferrall was 2 for 4 with a home run and 4 RBI; Didawick was 2 for 5 with a home run, a double and 3 RBI. Saucke was 2 for 6 with 2 RBI; Hanson was 1 for 2 with a home run, 2 walk and 2 hit by pitches. Several bench position players got into the game in the last few innings.

Virginia managed to overcome poor shooting to defeat Wake Forest 49 -47.

Once again Virginia was led on offense by Beekman and McNeely. Beekman led the Cavs' scoring with 20 points, and McKneely added 12. Beekman also tied for a team first 4 assists. The team was a poor 4 for 13 on three point shots and a dismal 1 for 11 on free throw attempts. Ultimately Virginia, led by Dunn and Buchanan, won on defense. Dunn had 7 blocked shots, and Buchanan had 2. Dunn also had a team leading 9 rebounds, and Buchanan was second with 7. Wake had the advantage in made free throws (4 to 10) and three point shots (5 to 4), but Virginia mad 18 of 41 two pointers, and the Deacons only made 14 of 34.
The talking heads will say that it was not a pretty game, but a not so pretty win is better than a pretty loss.

A wild game in more ways than one

Virginia fell behind in the first inning when Hofstra's leadoff batter hit a single up the middle, moved to second on the first of three errant pickoff attempts by O'Connor, O'Ferrall hit a lead off home run to even the score. Hofstra went ahead 4-1 in the 3rd on 4 hits. The scored was unchanged until the 6th when Virginia tallied 6 runs on four hits highlighted by a 2 RBI homer by Didawick. Hofstra tallied two runs in the 7th and narrowed the Cavs' lead to 7 and scored again in the 7th. O'Ferrall and Stephon were hit by pitches in the bottom of the inning , but Virginia did not score and clung to a 7-6 lead. After Hofstra scored a game tying run in the 8th, the Cavs tallied 3 more runs in the bottom of the inning on a leadoff single by Ford followed by four walks, a past ball, and three wild pitches for a 10-7 lead. Hofstra scored again in the top of the 9th before Teel came in to pitch with two runners in scoring positions and just one out. He retired the next two batters to give Virginia a 10 - 8 win.
Virginia pitchers gave up 15 hits and the team had just 7 hits with two each by O'Ferrall, Stephon, and Ford.

Back in the top 25

We came in at #21 this week right behind Wisconsin who fell 9 spots. Lots of teams in the bottom half of the top 25 lost over the last week which helped up us. Interestingly Dayton lost to VCU in their only game and they moved up two spots. We are now ahead of Kentucky.

Dunn vs McNeely and the NBA

I know that Dunn is a projected first round but I would worry as much about iMac leaving. They are really opposites. Dunn has no offensive game outside of dunks and Mcneely will have a harder time guarding in the NBA. But he has Steff Curry range and has developed the ability to drive and score and shoot the mid-range shot. If I am an NBA scout I would take him over Dunn at this point. What does everyone think>

Commitment! UVa lands 3-star OL Grayson Reid (Updated with story/quotes)

UVa added to their already-impressive 2025 class, with DC area OL Grayson Reid announcing his commitment this morning. Reid picked the Hoos over offers from VT, BC, Maryland, Pitt and others. He's the fourth member of UVa's 2025 class, and second offensive lineman, joining fellow three-star Jon Adair. UVa's class currently ranks 28th nationally.

Un-Luckie with the officials; lucky with McKneely and Beekman

Led by a career high 29 points by McKneely and 21 points by Beekman, Virginia overcame Florida State's advantage at the free throw line to win 80-76. McKneely was 5 of 7 from deep and 8 of 9 on free throws. The Cavs were 10 of 18 on three point shots while the Seminoles made just 2 of 16, but Virginia had 9 fewer foul shot attempts and had to go to the bench players early and often because of foul trouble. This was Virginia's eighth consecutive ACC win, four of which were on the road.

Bond

While I'll always defer to what Tony Bennett does, I'd really like to see Bond take Murray's minutes. Murray has had his moments and is a steady player, but Bond brings a little more athleticism and willingness to shoot.

If we have Bonds in the mix, I think we bring another willing scorer into the lineup which we need. My worthless 2 cents.
