WAR ROOM-- 3.4.16

The WAR ROOM is back and this edition is full of football recruiting scoop! With the another visit weekend on tap for the Wahoos, we'll give you a sense of who will be on Grounds tomorrow evening as well as look back on several new offers that came out of last weekend's visit. We'll also touch on some of the vibes we've getting from those on the trail and how that might impact UVa's recruiting efforts both in the class of 2017 and beyond.

As always, what's said in the War Room, stays in the War Room. Let's go!

Another visit weekend at UVa

While Virginia closes out its regular season on the hardwood tomorrow night and says goodbye to a standout group of seniors, Bronco Mendenhall and his staff will once again be hosting a number of their targets in the class of 2017.

Given how much success UVa had last weekend with guys like four-star Rivals100 Midlothian defensive back and current Arizona State commit Jermani Brown as well as four-star Cox defensive end Jordan Williams it's no surprise to see some important names on this list for tomorrow's visit, including three-star defensive tackle Tommy Christ, who we reported on recently, as well as standout Highland Springs offensive lineman Mekhi Becton, the 6-foot-7, 300-pound three-star tackle.

There will be some other prospects from the 804 in attendance including Dinwiddie ATH Tye Freeland and 2019 Varina signal caller Jalon Jones. And speaking of non-2017 kids, the Cavaliers are looking to host 2018 quarterback Tyler DeSue, the 2018 prospect out of Ocean Lakes, as well.

UVa offered three-star Hoschton (GA) Mill Creek offensive lineman Tyler Fannin last week and the 6-foot-3, 290-pound Peach State prospect is planning to be in Charlottesville tomorrow. Fannin also has offers from Cincinnati, ECU, Illinois, Kansas State, Southern Miss, and Western Kentucky, among others.

Staying in the Peach State, several weeks ago after he picked up his offer from UVa we told you more about three-star linebacker Solon Page. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound Marietta (GA) Kell standout is planning to make the trip up to Virginia tomorrow and it'll be a key visit for both Page and the Wahoos.

Another three-star prospect, UVa is also expecting to host Hampton defensive end Elijah Conliffe. Looking at his offer list, the 6-foot-4, 263-pound prospect already has Cincinnati, Georgia, Iowa State, Maryland, Ole Miss, UNC, NC State, Penn State, Tennessee, and Virginia Tech, among others. Clearly, this is a big opportunity for the Cavaliers to make an impression.

After he was in Blacksburg last weekend, the Cavaliers are also expecting to host Bethel safety Jeremiah Owusu. The 6-foot-2, 188-pound defensive back fits Mendenhall's defensive system very well but it could be an interesting recruitment for the Hampton native.

Lastly, when we caught up with three-star Garner (NC) defensive end Matthew Butler, he said he wasn't going to be able to visit as soon as he'd like because of basketball but his teammate, running back Collin Eaddy, had also picked up an offer from the Cavaliers. This weekend, the 5-foot-11, 195-pound running back will be taking his trip to The Hook.

Quiet week on the offer front

Coming off of what was one of the busiest weeks in terms of offers, it's no surprise that this week was significantly quieter. There were three that came out of the weekend, though, with two of them going out to players in the class of 2018.

UVa offered two-way Southampton lineman Tyran Hunt. The 6-foot-6, 270-pound defensive end/offensive tackle already has several ACC offers in addition to the one from the Cavaliers.

The Wahoos also offered Hopewell running back Ronnie Walker, a 5-foot-11, 185-pound prospect who is already getting some solid early in interest from the likes of Duke, Michigan State, and Ohio State in addition to UVa.

The other 2018 prospect that picked up an offer from Virginia coming out of the visit was James Mitchell, a 6-foot-4, 210-pound tight end/receiver from Big Stone Gap.

A growing sense of togetherness

Finally this week, we wanted to talk about an interesting situation among several recruits that could lead to potential commitments but also speaks to a larger vibe that UVa's been able to instill already.

This is something that's been clear in a number of the updates we've done but specifically, it sort of comes from three different recruits. We told you more this week about ATH Joey Blount, the legacy recruit out of Fairburn (GA) Landmark Christian School who clearly loved his visit last weekend and is probably as close to a fearless prediction candidate that we've seen in 2017 thus far. We also told you this week about three-star Covington (GA) linebacker Jaquan Henderson deciding to decommit from UCLA following his visit. It's too early to project for sure that he'll end up in Charlottesville but it's certainly trending that way.

There's no doubt that Blount, Henderson, and 2018 Bethel ATH Mondo Walker, younger brother of Rijo and Ricky, have become fast friends after spending time together last weekend. And this is the sort of thing that happened in UVa's 2016 class and why so many guys stuck with their commitments despite the coaching change.

In essence, players building bonds like this is the cornerstone of recruiting and it's a good sign that kids who really didn't know each other came out of the visit feeling that sense of togetherness. Considering folks were worried about this staff as recruiters, it seems much of that worry was misplaced. We'll see going forward to what degree the staff has success on the trail, even among these three, but the signs are clear that they are going to be solid.

That is it for this week, and as always, what's said here, stays here!

A sign of things to come on postseason awards? Hmm...

There's been a lot of talk in the past few weeks about Malcolm and POY and if those in the NC media would vote for him. Thought you guys would like to see what David Glenn and the folks over at ACCSports.com are saying they might go with.

For the record, I'll post our votes before we send them in to ACSMA by 2 a.m. Sunday.

If you had to add teams for a stronger basketball league. Who would you dump

Glad the ACC added after the forced football move, but we could make basketball even better

Dump- Wake F, Miami, Tech, BC

Add- Nova, Vandy, VCU, Georgetown or Xavier or U Conn

Pipe dream, but Football is where the money is, the adds of Pitt, Ville, ND, Cuse brought basketball back to where it needs to be.

Miami or Tech could move to SEC easy
BC or Wake could move to Big East

If we are just adding to make this a 16 team league-

1. Nova or U Conn
2. Vandy
3. Georgetown
4. VCU
5. Xavier
6. Memphis

baseball tickets

I was disappointed when I found that UVasports.com took away the marketplace to collaborate with stubhubs, which is the worst place ever to get tickets. I figured it was just football and basketball but apparently there is no marketplace at all for baseball anymore, either. Which leads me to this question, how do baseball ticket holders get rid of their tickets now? Stubhub doesn't really provide a market for college baseball. Anyway, I am looking for 2-3 reserved seats to the Saturday game in May versus Georgia Tech. If anyone has this game circled as one they can't make and would like to sell their tickets I am interested. I can get them straight from the ticket office in the left field bleachers as of now but I'd like something a little better.

Our best lineup the last 10 minutes of a close game

Only pose this question because Tony went unconventional for him with the four guard lineup because the matchup presented itself where we needed that lineup and certain teams are going to give us different looks.

Vs. a traditional lineup with a true post:

LP
MB
DH
IW
AG

This matchup is where you can get away with playing Tobey or Nolte.

Vs. a 4 guard lineup or a team that has a big who can stretch the floor:

LP
MB
MS
IW
AG

When you play against 4 guards Tobey or Nolte should barely see the floor. MS plays bigger than DH with his wing span, so he plays or you go here:

LP
MB
DH
MS
AG

Boston College

I heard a stat on the radio earlier I would like someone to confirm. No program has gone 0-for in both football and basketball in the same season since WWII. I don't want to necessarily pick on BC, but if they're racking up zero wins in football, why wouldn't the ACC look at replacing them with a school like UConn. I don't think I'm alone in preferring the ACC goes to 16 schools, but why not at least look at replacing BC. UConn and WVU? Just an idle thought.

Going to attempt to paint a picture for those worried about life without MB

This is the 7th year of the Bennett era. We saw signs of what great coaching can do when Bennett took a team of Sene, Farrakan (sp), Sherrill, Sammy Z, Evans, etc...and had them 5-2 and in first place his first season in Charlottesville. It was then that I knew we had a great coach. Fastforward to Mike Scott's senior season. We were all worried when he left and rightfully so, the cupboard wasn't stocked so well, yet. The next season, we probably should have made the tourney. Word was we were first one out and the 4 or so last mid majors in tanked. We played well in the NIT and the next year we won our first ACC regular season title and first tourney title since 76. Everyone worried about losing Joe Harris and Akil Mitchell but this time it was different. This time there was a little bit of talent in the pipeline. Whereas before it was all unrated guys except for Harris and freshman Brogdon trying to fill the void of of Scott leaving, in 2014-15 you had rated prospects Brogdon, Nolte, Anderson, Gill, Tobey, Wilkins, Hall, and a prospect rated highly in other places, Perrantes, was running the point. So what happens? 30-7 turned into 30-4. Are you seeing a trend here?

Ok, to hammer down the point further, what do all or most of the rated recruits above have in common? Don't know? They were all rated towards the bottom of the 150 except for Anderson. Brogdon was 104, Harris, Scott, Gill were all between 135-150, I forget where Tobey and Nolte landed because they bounced around so much but I am certain it wasn't top 75.

Before I get to the incoming recruits, I want to reiterate just what Tony and his assistants have done with average talent to date. Yes, I said average talent. If these players were as talented as they look in the UVa uniform, they would be dotting NBA rosters. As it is, I believe Mike Scott and maybe Justin Anderson are the only ones in the league and playing marginal roles. I may be jumping the gun on that point because the coming years could still unfold some surprises but I still think it works to reinforce the overall point. That being, you can expect certain players currently on the roster to make jumps next season. Someone out of Shayok/Thompson/Hall is GOING to average double figures next year. Wilkins may average near a double double. This is GOING to happen.

Now, add in what we have coming in. We have our first MDAA, we have a 5 star transfer and proven elite defender (was Nichols a MDAA, too?), we have a top 30ish jumping jack athletic big man, we have a top 50 point guard who dominated New York City, we have a top 50-60 wing, and we have the shooting up the rankings but rail thin big man that can shoot from North Carolina. To put it simply, Tony has more to work with than ever before. This thing is bigger than Brogdon, it was bigger than Joe Harris, it was bigger than Justin, and it was bigger than Mike Scott. This is a machine rolling forward and gathering steam. This is the Hoo Crew and JPJ being a death valley to opponents, this is coaches saying playing us is like playing "boys against men', this is the NCAA changing rules to slow down the culture yet the culture adapts. If you are worried, stop. Just stop. This is bigger than you know.
