FL Sttae v. UNCheat

Fl State averages 6'9" on their front line and has a ton of talent all over the follow. They have a 7'4-5" guy that comes off there bench, they are gaining UNC trouble around the rim after a poor start. As usual, they are poorly coached though, typical for Leonard Hamilton. With TB these guys could be playing as a team in the NBA! Hamilton is such a poor coach they just play playground ball. The Cheaters should;d be blowing them out, but they hang because of tremendous natural talent.

New offense football ?

Just cannot say how happy I will be with a new OC
What do you hope to see??

We do not have the personnel to run a pro set or power run. We are not Alabama.
Watched some highlights from BYU this season.
Saw a lot of shotgun and pistol with BYU and 4 to 5 receivers.

I like the quote from Anae last summer where he said that 300 yards a game passing was a good starting point.
Hope we have a QB ready for that .

Go Air Raid.

Something to watch...

Per reports from the Army Bowl check in down in San Antonio, four-star FSU offensive line commit Josh Ball is looking to take an official visit to both Florida State and.....UVa.

I had heard that new OL coach Garrett Tujague had been talking to Ball and a source I spoke to from northern Virginia this past week said that if Ball were to flip (and it was a big if) UVa was the most likely spot because of his prior relationship with Ball when Tujague recruited him at BYU.

I've reached out to Josh Hemholdt and Adam Friedman, who are down at the Army Bowl practices for Rivals, and we're hoping to catch up with Ball for a full story soon.

Cal Beats Utah

Our big OOC wins keep looking better and better....

Cal beat Utah tonight
Villanova has crushed Xavier and Creighton since we played them
West Virginia beat K-State at K-State
Ohio State keeps winning (granted, since the KY win, they haven't really beaten anyone that good)

Looking forward to smacking the cHokies around tomorrow night! Go Hoos!!

We are currently 8th in defensive points allowed at 59.1 a game.

The new rules of a faster shot clock and freedom of movement rule have given way to more points a game, when, in my opinion we are more efficient on floor defense than we were last year.

Last year we had an average for the year of 51.9 points allowed a game. If you take into consideration the number of points we gave teams when we sent in the walk ons in the last couple of minutes of blow outs we would have been down around 48.4 points a game. I remember several games they gave up 11 and 13 points in just 2 minutes to go.

We are currently ranked 8th, but if you look at the 1 thru 7 teams of Little Rock, Louisville, Texas Tech, Purdue, Valparaiso, St. Mary's (CA), and Old Dominion their average per game will change big time once they start playing conference play. Everyone of the teams ahead of us played some real stiffs and cupcake teams for OOC and I was surprised that Louisville had so many of them on their schedule. Some of the teams these other 7 leaders played already and held them to basically 30's scoring, would have had a hard time with beating a Top Division II or III or a top high school team. I'm glad Coach Bennett does put top 20 teams and mid major schools on the schedule in our OOC and not ridiculous easy wins. Some of the teams I saw playing the upper 7 teams in front of us were a joke. Grand Canyon????? Didn't even know there was a College team named University of Grand Canyon........what next season on their OOC schedule, ITT Tech?

Even though we have dropped points allowed due to rule changes, UVA this year to me is a better team than last years squad due to the depth and I like this current starting line up of Gill, Wilkins, Thompson, Brogdon and Perrantes with Tobey and Hall coming off the bench as the first to come in. I know that line up will change against the Dukes, FSU, and North Carolina, but this squad has five scores on the floor, along with guys that can play good defense, even on big match ups.

I thought Thompson and Perrantes rotating over to their man shooting had a lot to be desired last night, but they eventually tighten it up until we got that 19 point lead and there were some last series of allowing easier open threes, but the game was basically in hand at that point.

Man, schedule is back loaded!

I know everyone is concerned about Miami and they are a good team but I kind of expect UVa to be 8-0 heading into the Louisville road game. I just don't see Miami winning in the JPJ. Now, the last 9 games are VERY challenging! I see at 5 conventional possibilities for losses. Road games at Pitt (Never underestimate this place), Duke, and Miami along with home games against UNC and Louisville. I think if UVa ends up losing one of the first 9 be it Louisville or another, going 3-2 in these 5 while sweeping all the games they should win would be a great feat. Sounds like 15-3, to me. Of course, that assumes not getting upset by a team like Wake-Syracuse-NC State.

As I've watched our bench consistently produce, I can't help but wonder...

How competitive would a Tony Bennett coached team be with a starting lineup of Devon Hall, Marial Shayok (100% healthy), Mike Tobey, Evan Nolte & Jarred Reuter, with Jack Salt and our top 3 walk-ons off the bench?

I honestly believe that team, with our staff, could be middle of the pack in the ACC. An NIT lock, with an outside chance at the NCAA's. We've never had quality depth like we have now.

Everybody needs to check themselves...

So, apparently we can't have off topic threads anymore because either folks jump in to fight about the MOST random stuff....or posters just can't help but be disrespectful in general. I'm away from the board for a Sunday afternoon and come back to a Cowbodys/R's conversation and then a post about Bill Cosby and Joe Paterno. Why? I'm not real sure. But alas, no more OT conversations for a while. I see them, I'll delete them. Sorry but I'm not sorry.

Folks, this is a UVa sports board. On this board you can talk about...UVa sports. If you can't do that without being respectful of each other and keep ALL posts and ALL replies to CONTENT alone and not anything about the person posting them, then you can go do it somewhere else. I'm tired of having to deal with this foolishness.

UVa just hired a new football coach. The basketball team is No. 5 in the country. The baseball team is coming off a national title. So, why the heck are you guys fighting at every turn?!?

If you don't like someone's opinion, disagree with it or just ignore it. But this has gotten past the point of me tolerating it. That I have to post this is just disappointing on so many levels.

You're all adults who are passionate about UVa sports. Let's all act like it.

(Got questions? Email me. Inbox is wide open. But do not post about this stuff on the board. I'm going to delete it without reading it.)

Something I Noticed About BYU This Year

was that they were very strong defensively in the 2nd halves of games, especially 4th quarters. They won multiple games late because their defense kept them in the game.

6 of their opponents didn't score in the 4th quarter, and they only allowed a total of 68 4th quarter points (we allowed 118).

I think it's apparent that Bronco is really good at identifying how he needs to adjust his defense throughout the course of a game to stop things the opposing offense does well.

Just back from game

A friend on mine had an extra ticket and called me at the last minute; always love to go... The crowd was pretty good, not as loud as I expected for a sold out game. The biggest take away that I see from this game is the multiple people that can score at any point. Brogden did the most of his damage in the second half, Tobey came in for a limited time and had at least double digits, Gill worked hard inside all night against August and the other big man. Darius Thompson logged a whole lot of minutes and was productive, not just in scoring but in his defense and facilitating the offense. LP only had a few baskets but played good defense, set screens, kept balls alive, and set up others to score. Wilkins had a good game and his medium range jumper will help loosen the middle. He had a couple cheap (questionable) fouls called against him. Hall pulled himself out the TB doghouse with a solid game. Fun game to watch. However, I did not like letting ND getting within striking distance after being up 20. Need that killer instinct.
