Late 2025 offers

Cavs are looking to put finishing touches on their 2025 recruiting class and have extended some late cycle offers. Look for some OVs to be scheduled. Ward has already set an OV I was able to confirm. Hoping to catch up with him soon to learn more on his interest in UVA. He's currently committed to USF.

More World Records for UVA swimmers

I realize most here don't follow or care much about swimming, but it's still fun to share such global accomplishments.

Kate Douglass (alum still training at UVA) and Gretchen Walsh both set new WR today and this past week.

These are short-course meter (25-meter pool) records, which is not swum as frequently as college yards or international long-course (Olympics) pools, but still quite noteworthy.

Douglass just broke the 200-meter breaststroke record in a World Cup meet in South Korea - after winning Gold in Paris.

Walsh broke the rarely-swum 100-meter IM record in UVA's unique short-course meter dual meet with Florida last week - in mind-blowing fashion, as usual (and breaking the American record Douglass set in Shanghai literally hours earlier). Walsh broke 3 American records in the same meet, btw...

So things keep humming along for the UVA women on the world stage as the college season kicks off...

OT - The state of the WNBA

There are many delusional people and organizations in the world today, but the WNBA is among the top of the list. There are only about two dozen players who could be named by no one except the most ardent basketball fans. The league has been in existence for about thirty years and had their best season in terms of attendance and television viewership in the past decade and has lost money every year. The league lost about 40 million dollars this year. Much of the loss this year was because of increased spending on travel and lodging.
In spite of this, the players are demanding a substantial pay raise in the 2025 season. The owners of the NBA teams have funded the WNBA since its inception, and some are getting tired of losing money. All of the blame should not be placed solely at the feet of the players. The league and team managers are also culpable for several reasons including downplaying the role of Caitlin Clark in much of the relative success of the league this year. The average game attendance in 2024 was 9,807 up from 6,615 in 2023. Indiana Fever and Caitlin Clark averaged 17,056 and played in 19 of the top 22 games. The league has decided to further dilute the talent pool by adding another team next year.
Other changes need to be made. Hiring more competent officials would be a good start, but this will add to the budget. It is difficult to believe that the WNBA can survive much longer without making some substantial changes, and there is no indication that either the players or management are willing to change.

Stats show why I was wrong in the Clemson game

For the past several weeks, I have been guesstimating what the final score of our football games would be. Yesterday I thought that the final would be 35-10 in favor of Clemson. I would have been close if the game had ended after three periods when the score was 38-10, but Virginia scored 21 points and Clemson 10 in the final 15 minutes of play. I have since decided that I overestimated our defense and Clemson's second string defense. Virginia had the only interception. The Virginia defense was equally deficient on run and pass defense with just 2 tackles for loss and 0 pass break ups. Our pass defense allowed six different Clemson receivers to have catches of 20 or more yards, and Virginia had four receivers with 20 or more. Virginia gave up 203 yards rushing on 38 plays for a 5.1 yard average. On a positive note, the Virginia special teams played well.

Scrimmage vs VCU Today

Looks like we lost 71-49 to VCU today. Saunders had 19 points and McKneely, Ames and Bliss did not play (not sure why, hopefully no major injuries). Not a good start to the Sanchez era, though I know it's only a scrimmage and of course the players had a lot on their minds with Bennett's announcement, but still would have expected a closer score.
